The conflict group in my opinion presented a clear, concise and appropriate presentation. The beginning of their presentation delineated that a conflict is a serious disagreement or argument there are normal and an inevitable part of life that can either strengthen or weaken a relationship.
I found the group provided distinctive and specific examples to the class that reflected the levels of conflict within their collaboration team and highlighted the following as possible causes for conflict;
The conflict team provided some short strategies to resolve conflict. Firstly they suggested we ask the following questions;
Do you get angry with the same person every time?
Is your anger work related?
Do you respect the other person?
- Identify each members strengths and weakness
- Define acceptable behaviours in a group
- A group leader is necessary
- Common mistakes is forgetting that there is multiple ways of doing things
- All members work towards a common goal
- Conflict arises from a lack of information
- Can lead to finding a middle ground to settle ideas and arguments
The group explored a clear understanding of the conceptual context of collaboration when it comes it conflict. Majority of people see conflict as a negative thing, and while it mostly can be, conflict is inevitable and can have some positive outcomes.
Discussing differing conflict views can potentially reach successful outcomes and provide opportunities to explore and redefine new was to find solutions. Conflict can also promote creativity through problem solving and further experimentation of new negotiation styles.
The collaborative team touched on a very relevant topic when identifying the types of people causing conflict and therefore the conflict that had arisen in their group.
- The “my idea is better than yours” – may cause disputes and set the project back
- The “drama queen” – distribute blame
- The “never on time” – always late, poor time management
- The “Dr. Lazy” - the lack
- The “Carry” – the person that does all the work, may not be able to see the bigger picture
- The “Ninja” – silent but deadly
- The “Mr. Clueless” – no communication or lack of skills to complete the project
Such issues that were causing concerns in the marker project included:
- The “friendship dilemma”
- Unorganised hierarchy
- Individual commitment levels
- Different characteristics and personalities
- Disagreements between designs
- Without a leader deadlines weren’t being met
